35:00 10K pace

Target pace
5:37 / mile
3:30 / km
for 6.2137 miles · 10 km

To finish a 10k in 35:00 you need to average 5:37 per mile or 3:30 per kilometre. Halfway should come up on the watch at 17:30.

Both paces are rounded down, so they are targets to beat rather than to match exactly — hold them and you finish a few seconds inside 35:00 rather than a few seconds outside it.

How to pace it

A 10K is run close enough to threshold that the pace has to be right from the first kilometre; there is not enough race left to correct a bad opening mile.

  • Bank nothing. Time gained in the first mile is borrowed at a punitive rate. Running the opening mile 15 seconds quick almost never returns 15 seconds at the end.
  • Check at halfway, not at every mile. 17:30 is the number that matters. Mile-to-mile variation of a few seconds is normal and chasing it wastes attention.
  • Know your slow-down plan. Decide in advance which splits you will accept losing if conditions or the day turn against you, so the decision is not made mid-race.
  • Run the pace in training. A goal pace you have never held for a sustained effort is a guess. Practise it in blocks long enough to feel like the race.
